The e-filing system is an online platform designed to allow individuals electronic submission of documents in courts. This system has enables lawyers, litigants, and other relevant parties to file various legal documents, such as complaints, petitions, written statements, & applications online without the need for in-person court visits. Users can upload required documents to a designated e-filing portal through any internet-enabled computer or device. The platform is bilingual (English & local language) to reach a greater audience. 
A step-by-step guideline for e-filing in Delhi District Courts is listed below:
I.    Registration:

  1. Go to the http://www.efiling.ecourts.gov.in/ portal and choose ‘Create Account’ option to register yourself as an advocate or a litigant.
  2. Once your account has been created, enter the required details such as your mobile number, email ID, bar registration number (for advocates), user ID, enrolled state/district/establishment, etc. A one-time password (OTP) will be generated and sent to your mobile number/email ID.
  3. Set a secure password and upload your photograph and ID proof in JPEG format within 5-50 KB. 

II.    Filing a Case:

  1. After creating it, login to your account using the User ID and password you have created and click on “New Case” on the dash board to begin the process.
  2. Select ‘Delhi’ as the state and the concerned district court.
  3. Fill out the petitioner & respondent details and/or any required details. The details of the petitioner and respondent will be filled in separate forms on the platform.
  4. Select the relevant case type from the ‘Case Type’ drop box. You need to be careful while filling the details as you will be directed accordingly to the specific page in the later stage of a new case filing. Fields marked with an (*) are mandatory.  
  5. Make sure you click ‘save’ on the submit form before moving to the next screen.
  6. Upload the petition, vakalatnama, and other documents in PDF format to ensure that the documents are properly indexed.
  7. Go through the following forms- Subordinate Court, Act-Section, (Add) Extra Party, advocate details. Fill them out and select the subject category for the case.
  8. Upon reviewing the details, click “Generate ID” to complete the process. A provisional application number will be provided for future reference. 

III.    Post-Filing:

1.    You can now view the files case details using ‘generate reports’ and check case status using ‘report’ and ‘history’ options. 
2.    Thereafter the e-filed case will be processed by the courts & an SMS/email alert will be sent to the registered mobile number & email ID. 

OBJECT:

The main objective for implementing e-filing procedure in the judicial system is to streamline and modernize the process of electronically submitting legal documents. The key objectives are: 
-    Promotion of Paperless filing: E-filing reduces our reliance on paper documents, and contributes to an environmental sustainability. 
-    Enhanced Accessibility: Advocates and litigants are able to file cases and submit documents at any hour of the day, from any location, completely eliminating the need to physically visit the court to file the documents. 
-    Increased Efficiency: With its easy accessibility, the system design has enabled saving time and money significantly in comparison to the traditional filing methods. 
-    Enhanced Accuracy: E-filing has resulted in minimization of errors through automated data entry and built-in error-checking features, leading to higher accuracy in submissions. 
-    Quick Processing: Electronic submissions have also facilitated faster processing than paper filings, that permits quicker case management and resolution.
