Professional Tax - Means income derived from a profession.  Tamilnadu Professional Tax law says that a Govt. servant receiving pay from the revenue of the Central or State Govt.  This provision clearly says that Govt. running professional undertakings like GAIL, SAIL, BSNL, LIC, etc. Recently, I have requested Thanjavur Municipality to provide details of collection of professional tax collected in Thanjavur.  Only employees working in Municipal / Revenue Department have been collected.  Even though there are so many Govt. offices in Thanjavur, the Commissioner has insisting on collecting Professional Tax from the employees of Department of Post.  As I have asked information under RTI Act, he specifically mentioned my name and direct the drawing and disbursing officer to deduct professional tax from my salary.  The Department of Posts is not earning any income and postal department is not a professional department and it is a service department.

How a Govt. Servant be termed as Professionals? On the other hand no Advocates, Doctors, Business Men, etc. are not paying professional tax.  It is also pertinent to point out here that in Tamilnadu, professional tax on employees of Department Posts is deducted only at Chennai and Thanjavur and other places, no tax is deducted which is not a discriminatory?
