1. The Supreme Court on Monday took a serious view of the slow progress of probe in the scam pertaining to defence purchases made during and after the Kargil war in 1999. It directed the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to furnish a status report by the next date of hearing. The purchases, made during the previous NDA regime, allegedly cost the exchequer Rs 2,175 crore.
2. With the Supreme Court on Monday withdrawing the anticipatory bail granted to Gujarat police DySP N K Amin, the CID (crime) may have got the green signal to arrest him. He is wanted in connection with the fake encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Shiekh and his wife Kauser Bi. The officer on run, however, has gone missing from his residence. Amin, who was granted an anticipatory bail by a trial court in Ahmedabad on June 8, had surrendered before the CID on June 18. Though on papers, he was technically arrested, he was allowed to leave because of the anticipatory bail granted to him.
3. The Supreme Court has ordered cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Gujarat Deputy Superintendent of Police Narender K Amin, allegedly involved in the Sohrabbudin Sheikh fake en counter case.
4. Health and security hazards faced by residents living in the vicinity of railway tracks and stations in the Capital may force the Northern Railways to beef up its act. Piled-up garbage, rotting waste, broken boundary walls of railway stations and teeming slum clusters have brought residents to seek the Delhi High Court's intervention against the railway management. A Division Bench led by Justice T S Thakur today directed General Manager, Northern Railways, to be personally present in court on August 17.
5. The P & H High Court issued notices to Punjab, Haryana governments and Chandigarh administration, on the basis of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Jagmohan Singh Bhatti. The petitioner had urged the Court to direct the three states to take effective steps for preventing the sale of spurious desi ghee, milk and adulterated items in the three states. The petitioner added that the absence of adequate checks and remedies could result in rising health hazards in the populace. The Court has been asked to direct the states and various outlets about the same.
