Ban on exit and opinion polls

Fresh guidelines banning publication of exit and opinion polls before the coming Lok Sabha elections are likely to be issued by the Election Commission.

The move comes against the backdrop of the Supreme Court leaving it to the discretion of the EC to decide on laying down guidelines on the opinion and exit polls till the government frames regulation on the issue.

What is your view? Whether exit and opinion polls should be banned?

Sir, in my view a ban on exit pole or something is not going to help for fair elections. its not worth bannin the same since they only predicts what could happen on the basis of survey done to quite few people. exit poles are kind of enetertainment rather than being a base for the elections.

in my view neither its harmful nor its benefecial for the elections.

yes sir, exactly Mr.Manish saying is correct, already it made very clear that what media predicts is going to do nothing with the people's  mind, in this media people are in two categories one is for predict the real scenario based on the datas, survey of past elections and interact with the people not as a whole...... another category of media people are merely trying to change or expecting to change the people by way of this kind of opinions and exit poll against the truth.... but i hope people are not only considering and vote based on their report and all...... now the upcoming generation is really thinking and do it effectively so my opinion no need to be banned..... as they claiming as freedom of media.......

Hope V all r decided voters so exit poles r definitely entertainment for us.

But in remote areas exit poles are indeed serious issue and it also affects Politicians and sometimes exit poles are nearly true in prediction.

I agree with Manish n Ravikumar.

Thanks Prakash Sir for putting this subject on the Forum

ban on news channel must

Shree. ( Advocate.)     03 February 2009

Dear All,

Exit  and Opinion polls should be banned, because all who involved in this practice are sponsored by the Ruling party or Opposition. For their monetry benefit they provide false reports/analysis to viewers/readers and try to dupe them by showing that this party is going to prevails. As India is very big country population around 110 crores, exit poll does not reflect true picture for whole voting community. One issue may prevails in a certain area, but it does't impact whole country.

Doing survey and statistical analysis is a profession, and everybody has a fundamental right to pursue this profession. Their result may be wrong or misleading or sponsered- those cannot be reason to ban them.

Let us take the first point- they are sponsered. We all admit that they are done by news media. If those polls are sponsered, dont you think that news media is sponsered. On this logic, we should ban news media.

Let us take the second issue that their predictions are wrong. You cant ban something merely because they produce wrong result. You cant ban reserve bank merely because all their inflation and interest reate predictions are wrong. You cant ban various development agnecies because their growth projections are wrong. You cant ban courts because their judgments are wrong and set aside in appeal. You cant ban lawyers because their arguments are wrong. You cant ban things merely becasue it is wrong.

Let us take the third issue- they mislead the voting public. But that is waht democracy is all about. Politicians promises are misleading, ban them. Electoral propganda is misleading, ban them. Calim of political paries that they are winning election, ban them. Advertisement of politcal parties mislead people, ban them. Speeches of political leaders mislead people, ban them.

The demand for ban is a fasict demand. It is undemocratic. It is against liberty. It thinks people are idiots.

Let the pollsters do their survey, people are mature enough to decide.

Well, i think exit polls and opinion polls are overated and do not present a true picture of the actual ground situation. and that has been proved on more occassions then one. Although the media would like to believe that they are successful in building opinions through these discussions, that is far from the truth. The truth is that it barely matters, since the India public listens to one thing and does its own thing. There was so much media hype surrounding the India shining campaign but still Congress won. Narendra Modi has always been berated in the media and still he has won the majority of votes in Gujarat consecutively. So people are smart enough to know who is bluffing and who means business. So let exit polls and opinion polls be. Makes for amusing television to watch the so called "experts" (who usually are chaddi buddies of the channel anchor or news person) make fools of themselves.
