Can become farmer by doing agriculture on residential land ?

Hi, I am an NRI want to go back to India and become farmer. I know Indian law do not allow non-farmers to buy agriculture land and I can only buy residential plot. Now, my question is if I buy big residential land and start doing farming there, can I obtain after 5 years or more a permission to buy agriculture land? I want to do only farming and cow protection only. no other purpose. I hold Indian passport.
