Careless Cheque Processing by Citibank

I have a harrowing recent experience with citibank when I deposited another closure account cheque to my account in Citibank. Though the amount was like 89.94 rupees, I got an alert (SMS) from the bank like cheque for 8994 rupees deposited and on 24 hours hold. Two days later they bounced the cheque and trying to process it again. They are in a vicious circle twice with the Citiphone singing a lullaby of 24-48 hours as always they do.

They are only keen to debit the cheque bounce charges. How to go about dealing with them?

Initiate a proceeding before the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum for deficiency of service / unfair trade practice done by the service provider- Bank.

Why? Can't Citibank be manned by fools? Is it the monopoly of PSU banks?

A bank has returned the cheque for insufficiency of funds. The bank has no record that the cheque book  in question was issued to the a/c holder.

What action can be taken against the bank?

Dear All,

I totally agree with Mr.Devajyoti Barman Sir's view point and would like to add that apart from Consumer Court one can opt for Banking ombudsman as well.

In so far the query of Mr.Anil Agarwal regarding bank having no record of issuance of cheque book to the account holder  is concerned as per the standard bank manual practice for every issuance of cheque book there has to be a written or postal acknowledgement and one can trace out the details of the account holder from the series of the cheque book etc.  The catch here is for what reason the bank is not doing it in writing.  May I suggest to shoot a notice seeking information from the bank and the moment the bank confirms the same in writing then you have a cause to nail down the wrongdoer in consumer court/banking ombudsman.

Thanks and best regards

Daksh

Dear, give a notice to the bank for deficiency of service and malpractice on its part and filed the complaint before district consumer dispute redressal forum for seeking compensation for mental agony etc.

Thanks.

I  have written actually to indiaservice@citi.com but till now they haven't cared to reply or post a reversal of unwarranted cheque bounce charges.

Best remedy is to write to the bank ombudsman panel whose names and locations are listed

in the Reserve Bank of India's website. Please check for the location closer to you and lodge the complaint.
