Caste of child - determination

Does anyone know how is the caste of a new born child determined  ?  Background information.

1. Father is "forward caste"  and mother is OBC. Both are Indian nationals and married via HMA.

2. Child is born in Norway and has OCI/PIO status ( Overseas Citizen of India/ Person of Indian Origin )

Question:

1. Can the child obtain a "OBC" Certificate identifying his caste ?

2. What are the pros-cons of having/not having caste certificate ?

3. What is the legal basis for caste determination ?

Generally the caste of the father is the caste of the children.

However there is one judgement either from Mumbai HC or Gujrat HC which allowed children to get reservation benefits based on the caste of the mother.

You would need to look for the same @ www.indiankanoon.org

Also, I don't see it as a big issue. Sorry to say, I am against reservation of all kinds.
