Dear Rumi Saikia, apart from what the experts has posted, we all know what is prohibited relationships, but they exist in name only which is only a creation of the society mental set up and so it exist in Hindu Laws. But why on earth are you scared if you truly Love each other. Even in Nagaland we do have that kind of prohibited relationship which are mostly ignored after the marriage. So get on the Board and start your life with your true Love. Lovers should live like the Gauls who are not scared of anything except the sky falling on their heads. You have to gather courage and if there is opposition from family both of you should stand firm. You talk to each other and decide how to proceed. You are not Sapindas. Sapindas are paralell cousins whose ascendancy is purely through father his father etc. You are related to him through your father. But he is related to you through his mother. Under Hindu marriage Act matriarchial descendents are also considered sapindas up to 3 generations. But cross cousins are never Sapindas. The term Sapinda comes from the word pinda meaning a rice ball. Rice balls are used in rituals performed to dead ancestors. Your father will offer pinda to his father. Your non-Assamese uncle will offer pinda to his non-Assamese ancestors.

You have to talk to each other and make up your mind. Then convey to your respective parents. If they agree be happy and go ahead. If they do not, you can go to the Office of Registrar of marriages and get married. In order to be really safe you can go out of Assam and get married.

There is no alternative to courage.

The above statement doesn’t say “cousins or cross cousins”. It is a flat statement.  Hence my question.
