Hong Kong Exports up 21.5 Percent in March
The total value of shipments increased to HK$281.5 billion ($36.2 billion) compared to a year ago, according to the Census and Statistics Department, led by a robust growth in merchandise exports during the month.
Key to the performance was exports of electrical and telecommunications appliances to markets such as Thailand, Taiwan, India, mainland China and Singapore.
"The vibrant performance of the Asian economies and the sustained recovery in the US and EU should continue to render support for Hong Kong's export performance," a government spokesman said in a statement.
"Even though exports to Japan grew notably in the month despite the earthquake on March 11, the impact of the incident on regional trade flows may become more discernible in the trade figures for the coming months," it added.
For the three months to March, exports rose 17.2 percent year-on-year compared to the first quarter in 2010.
