NEW DELHI: A trial court has sentenced a 75-year-old man along with his wife and three other family members to varying jail terms in connection with the suicide of their newly-married daughter-in-law because of harassment for dowry.

While sentencing victim Meera's husband, Bharat Bhushan, to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment, the court jailed her father-in-law Lal Chand (75) and mother-in-law Man Devi (65) for two years each. It also sentenced Bharat Bhushan's brother Amar Chand and cousin Ganesh to two-and-a-half years of imprisonment each and imposed a total fine of Rs 95,000 on them, ordering that half of the fine would go to the victim's family.

"The factum of death of the woman within 18 months of her marriage directly reflects that she had been subjected to torture and harassment at the hands of the accused persons as a result of which, having found no way for her dignity, she suffered death under the mysterious circumstances," additional sessions judge Raj Kumar said.

Meera, who got married to Bharat in 2006, committed suicide on the night of September 30, 2007, by jumping from the roof of her matrimonial house at Karol Bagh in central Delhi. A case was registered at Prasad Nagar police station.

The court noted that her in-laws used to abuse and taunt her for bringing insufficient dowry and had been raising consistent demands for items like gold chains and a motor cycle.

Convicting all the family members on charges of subjecting the woman to cruelty under Section 498 (A) of the Indian Penal Code, the court held her husband guilty of driving her to commit suicide under Section 306 of the IPC.

The court said Meera's in-laws used to remark that she had come from a "cheap family" and her husband used to come home drunken and abuse and beat her up.
