My parents passed away over a decade ago. My father passed away first and two years later, my mother also passed away. My sister and I are their only heirs. My father had a self acquired property. Though the property has now been mutated to the names of my sister and I, a lawyer recently advised us to go for a legal heir certificate. I have been told that in Delhi, the legal heir certificate is called the surviving member certificate and that it is issued by the SDM of the area. Is this correct? Or are these two separate certificates?
