Man kills wife who was pregnant with female child..

  India:Man kills wife who was pregnant with a female child tweetmeme_service = 'bit.ly'; tweetmeme_style = 'compact';

An Indian man beat his wife to death in the southern Andhra Pradesh state, after learning that she was pregnant with a female baby. Prakash Chari beat and strangled his wife Surekha, who was six months pregnant. Chari was outraged after his wife, who had already borne a girl child a few years earlier, was determined to continue her pregnancy after learning that the 2nd child was also female.

The couple had apparently returned from a private clinic, where Surekha had undergone an illegal s*x-determination test, when the husband became enraged and assaulted her. Police arrested Prakash Chari, and are now also pressing charges against the clinic where the tests were done.

India outlawed s*x-determination tests in a bid to cut down on the common practice of aborting girl babies. At least 5 million girls are estimated “missing” in India during the past decade as a result of s*x-selection abortions. India now has a heavily skewed ratio of young boys to girls, reflecting an ancient cultural bias against female children. The gender bias can be traced to the Hindu belief that a man cannot attain moksha (salvation) unless a son performs his last rites. This religious sanction has rendered girl children unwanted. Heavy demands for dowries for brides have made girls an economic liability for their families, aggravating the problem.

Hope the guilty is punished! If the ban on illegal testing of the s*x of fetus had been properly enforced, the woman would still be alive. The Government is equally to blame. In fact, somebody should ask them how such tests are blatantly carried out. Is there any point of making laws? Only if you pay a fat court fee and fight 10 years in court, only then you get justice in this country. Otherwise laws are useless, worth less than the paper they are printed on.

Even if the ban is strictly enforced,people will start killing new born baby girls.People can be that manipulative..

They will start killing the mums "responsible" for only bearing female children so that the father can remarry to have a male.

Meenal, your post has again highlighted the same issue - the problem is with law enforcement. As long as we don't have a mechanism to enforce laws, the lawmakers could be writing an essay on the rainbow or a treatise on Shakespeare. Who cares, if the business of s*x determination is blatantly conducted in every city?

very sad.

Again typical mentality of some Indian male proved.

How inhumane!

Guilty should be punished and the laboratory licence where this test was performed should be cancelled for ever.

@roshini b: i m sure and pray tht the culprit is given  punishment in accordance with the law.. but to drag the name of hindu religion is unnecessary and uncalled for. what have u written regarding the belief is sheer misinterpretation. what it says and prescribes is a religious duty that if a hindu is not having a son he is given ample freedom to adopt one. it doesnot mandates any one to kill a girl child so that he will beget a son and attain mokksha.

Alas, over the time period people have misunderstood and misinterpreted the belief.
