What does "free of charge" mean here? in Section 8 of maternity benefit act which reads
" Payment of medical bonus. (1) Every woman entitled to maternity benefit under this Act shall also be entitled to receive from her employer a medical bonus of one thousand rupees, if no pre-natal confinement and post-natal care is provided for by the employer free of charge."

The medical bonus now enhanced to Rs.3500/-. free of charge means the employer may bear the expenses of the prenatal and post natal expenses or through their dispensary (if it is a large organization having medical facilities) or has insured the employee under medical cover where such medical expenses are reimbursed. ALso this medical bonus would be claimable from ESI wherever the employee is covered under ESI and has qualified for the benefit (contribution period completion).
