Dear Sutapa,
There are plenty of options for an engineer to pursue a career in intellectual property rights. Depending on your specialization in engineering, you may select the patent area ranging from mechanical/manufacturing, electronic and telecommunications, information technology to bio-sciences and pharmaceuticals or healthcare and many more.
As for the course on IP, there are a lot of options available too post your engineering. If you are looking for a full time course, the best course for science background people is offered by National Law University,Jodhpur and Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, based at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. They both offer Masters in IP and three year LL.B. with specialization in IP, respectively for both science and law students.
Almost all the national law schools and good private law colleges and universities are teaching IP programs, some full time and some through distant education. For distant education, you may refer to National Law of India University, Bangalore and NALSAR,Hyderabad. They have best distant education contact classes for IP.
If you are still studying engineering, you may check with distant education programs, if they offer you admission while continuing with engineering studies.
A career in IP for engineers is very promising as Patenting in India has picked up very well and is sure to go out of conservative bounds in future.
In my opinion, the best strategy for you could be to take a IP course in distant education format and start applying in law firms and companies for patent positions. Also, if you are serious about a career in IP, particularly patents, you would have to give patent agent exam which requires thorough preparation as pass percentage for same is very less but not impossible to crack. Your market positioning would be much strong if you clear the patent agent exam. Once you finish your distant education program and get a job and you find it interesting to pursue law too, you may join a traditional university for LL.B. while continuing with your job. (Please note LL.B. is not a requirement for pursuing career in patents. you should prefer it if you find NON patents interesting as LL.B. would be sought there).
The field of IP is extremely promising for non patents also but seeing your background in engineering, patents would be a better and rewarding career option in my opinion.
P.S. - Please note that this is not a official career or legal advise and I shall not be responsible for any of your decisions.
