This is an important and interesting question. Every question has an answer and most importantly based upon the logics and settled by highcourts and supreme court.

This question has been dealt by the supremecourt and held that :

The step mother cannot be considered and equated as natural mother. so the benevolent provision of SEction   crpc is not available to the step mother. But every case has exceptions, and so it is in the case of step mother also.

The. childless step-mother could claim maintenance from her step-son provided she was a widow or her husband, if living, was incapable of maintaining her.
