The last section mentioned in the Indian Penal Code is Section 511. So initially when the IPC was drafted there were 511 sections. But later, with the passage of time, many amendments took place in the criminal law. Many sections have been repealed and so many inserted amidst the IPC. Other people neglects these sections and simply answers that IPC has 511 sections divided among 23 Chapters.
Now coming to the actual numbers, so IPC initially consisted of 511 sections in 23 Chapters. Till date, (upto the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 2013) total 62 sections are inserted in the IPC and 21 sections have been repealed from it.
So the total number of sections in IPC will be 511 + 62 = 573. And if we talk about total effective sections then the repealed sections will be subtracted, and it will become 573 - 21 = 552. Similarly the total numbers of chapters in IPC is 26 as 3 chapters are later added to it by amendments.
