Account opening

At what age a minor (who can sign independently) open an account without any guardian.. Also can the bank open an joint account without seeing the minor or minors knowledge?

A minor is a minor and there is no such age prescribed for minor in minority period.

Any guardian, for benefit of minor can open a bank account.

Guardian for the purpose of opening the account is either father or minor or any other person who is having that custody.

There are many types of accounts.   Except permitting withdrawals over and above limit, in Indian Banking there are never anly such restrictions.

Even loans are permitted against such deposits filing simple affidavit that it is for the benefit / necessaries of minor.

Be specific and precise in your query with facts if you like guidance from experts.

Thanks for the input. I came to know, RBI has comeup with the guidelines where minors 10 years (or ???) above can start an independent a/c without any guardian. Is this rule implemeted in national banks in India?

For Qtn 2, consider this scenario. A Joint Account opened by the Paternal Grandfather with Minor as co-applicant. Minor (who lost his parents and no siblings) is not aware of this account since minor stays abroad with his aunt.

- Can the Bank allow this joint account opening without the knowledge of the minor.

- Can the co applicant use this account in his own favour without the minors knowledge?

RBI uniform directives/guidelines apply to all Banks.   When an account is being operated for on and behalf of minor by the person who signed the AOF, there is no such consent required from minor.

Contact your Bank manager one to one and get clarification of all these simple doubts.
