Can anybody explain the meaning of this

PW.1 present. Costs imposed paid. Memo filed. Defendant counsel filed petition U/S 148 of CPC seeking further time for cross examined of PW.1 as time extended till 31-10-2016 with a specific direction to defendant to appear along with counsel for cross examination. What does that mean ?does the defendant need to attend the case?If he needs to,what happens if he doesn't appear?
