Can High court/ Supreme Court grant interim protection in civil contempt matters?

Recently K Nageshwar Rao was made to sit the Court till rising of the Court in punishment for contempt of Court - Supreme Court. Before that Ex-Justice Calcutta High Court Karnan was punished in Contmept for 6 months imprisonment.
