Can i sue for slander/defamation?

HI,

I resigned from my company in Nov/Dec 2011. I was the acting functional head (nothing was ever formalized about this role). After I resigned, 6 of my colleagues chose to leave and join me where I was going. My last working day was January 20, 2012. (This was longer than the prescribed period in the company's rules.)

On January 17, 2012, the HR head called me and told me that since I had completed all the handover etc. I need not come for the next few days. (Please note that the company operated out of two offices and the HR department was in a separate office.) I asked to be relieved on the same day, but she said that January 20, 2012 would be the official last day. This happened around 4 - 4.30 in the afternoon.

While I was waiting in the office which had the HR Dept. the HR head and the person identified to fill my position called a meeting of the team (29 people) and announced that I was indulging in unethical behaviour and had been asked to leave.

The company had 250+ people. In addition, this communication was also spread in the industry (through grapevine). I work in a niche industry and am fairly known -- both within the industry in the country and definitely within the industry in the city.

I would like to know whether I have a case of slander/defamation against the two people who called the meeting.

Please note that I do not think that the company is responsible. I am certain that these two people did not inform the HR or the Legal department in the HO before (or after) the event. Sp it is just these two individuals that I would like to sue.

Do let me know whether I have a case and can do it.

Thanks

Yes, you can. but for this you need to have witness i.e. somebody from the company who was attending that meeting when all this incident took place.

you could also send a legal notice through an advocate to the company asking them to take action against these two employees for such unethical behaviour.
