Brawl over dowry at wedding venue
NEW DELHI: Pandemonium broke out at a marriage function in Jamia Nagar on Saturday night when the bride's and the groom's sides got engaged in a verbal duel over dowry. The situation turned ugly around 9.30pm when the groom's family allegedly started breaking chairs at the wedding venue after they allegedly got angry when the bride's side refused to give in to their dowry demands.
Police rushed to the venue, after the bride's family made a PCR call, and brought the situation under control.
According to the police, the bride's family has alleged that the groom's family had demanded dowry just before the marriage function was to commence and this lead both sides exchanging abuses. "The groom's family asked for Rs 1 lakh cash and a car. We had already acceded to their other requests of a washing machine and other electric appliances and when they asked for more we protested. They hen turned violent," alleged the bride's brother-in-law Abul Fazal.
A complaint in this regard has been registered in Jamia Nagar police station. A case is yet to be registered and no arrests have been made so far, said police. "We will speak to both the parties first before registering a case. The matter is still under investigation," said a senior police officer.
