The amount of alimoney would be negotiated, bargained and settled by the couple, there is no straight jacket formula. However, the groom has to pay, if she do not forgo.

Unless one knows how much the court is likely to sanction, how does one negotiate? From what I have read, for short duration marriages like 1-2 years, the court normally awards 50% of the number of years spent together in marriage, i.e. if the marriage is for 24 months the court will award 1/4th of the salary for 12 months. Is this right?

Hence I would require more clarification regarding the likely amount to be awarded by the court, based on which the negotiations would take place.
