Dowry vs gift

Respected Legal Experts,

Can anybody explain the difference between Dowry and gifts. I mean to say if anything demanded from in-laws in particular at the time of marriage is termed as dowry, which is an offence.

But, when there is nothing demanded, but in-laws give some ornaments, furniture and clothing etc for the sake of tradition, whether it is also dowry or to be treated as gifts.

These things are not dowry , these gifts are legally termend as " Stridhan"

Girl  can claim these gifted items by filing case of section 406 ipc
