See, in 1972 for the first time countries across the world came together to identify and address environmental problems. The United Nations Conference on Human Environment, held in Stockholm (1972) was the first international intergovernmental conference to focus on environmental problems.
The preparations as well as the period immediately following the conference had lasting consequences for the course of International Environmental Law.
The Stockholm Conference also resulted in the adoption by governments of the UN Stockholm Declaration on the Human Environment. This document set the stage for the further development of principles of international environment, which focused on both economic development and environmental protection as well.
