Exparte at first step

Can a case be exparte at the very beginning of the case itself like, the opening step itself is exparte. I haven't got the notice but the step now is exparte evidence. In what circumstances can this happen?

Join proceedings of the case and contest it tooth and nail through a local prudent lawyer, why do you continue the case as "ex-parte"?
