my grandfather was given 5 acres of land for his services for india's freedom movement, few years ago some people living nearby occupied that land, we some how got the land back, last year or so the government in my state took it for some scheme without notifying us or compensating us, what can we do to get it back? should we file a case?

Very much even a government cannot take back land which is gifted to the freedom fighter without following the proper procedure of law and principal of natuyral justice, eventually they will have to compensate the acquired land in monetry terms or other land somewher, good matter to fight in the court of law.
