@ Author,

1.
In the various decisions rendered after the decision in re.: Godse's case [1961 SCR (3) 440], 'imprisonment for life' has been repeatedly held to mean imprisonment for the natural life term of a convict, though the actual period of imprisonment may stand reduced on account of remissions earned.

But in no case, with the possible exception of the powers vested in the President under Art. 72 of the Constitutition and the power vested in the Governor under Art. 161 of the Constitution, even with remission earned can a sentence of imprisonment for life be reduced to below 14 years the Hon'ble SC has said.

The Hon'ble SC has further held that in case of life imprisonment, a convict should serve a minimum of 14 years imprisonment.

2.
No criminal prisoner sentenced to labour or employed on labour at his own desire shall, except on an emergency with the sanction in writing of the Superintendent, be kept to labour for more than nine hours in any one day.

3.
Provision shall be made by the Superintendent for the employment (as long as they so desire) of all criminal prisoners sentenced to simple imprisonment; but no prisoner not sentenced to rigorous imprisonment shall be punished for neglect of work excepting by such alteration in the scale of diet as may be established by the rules of the prison in the case of neglect of work by such a prisoner.

4.
Life Imprisonment requires labour. Therefore productive work is provided inside the jail by means of industries. Inmates are paid wages for their labour, which helps them to establish a form of livelihood inside jail during their long jail term.

I feel reading your background here under various forums you are simply fishing. However, be it so, give me a PM if ever once THAT situation arise I will try to "fix you" in ‘bakery’ job where you can bake your cake and eat it too

like imprisionment means imprisonment for life but as per section 57 IPC life imprisonment ments imprisonment upto 20 years.

N.K.Assumi (Advocate)     08 July 2012

Life imprisonment means imprisonment for full and complete natural life in jail, though the prisoner can be given renission by the appropriate authority. Reading section 45 of the Indian Penal Code life imprisonment is for life and that section 57 of the Indian Penal code is only for calculating the terms of punishment.

N.K.Assumi (Advocate)     08 July 2012

Life imprisonment means imoprisonemnt for life, but the appropriate authority can give remission to the prisoner. Read in the light of section 45 of the Indian Penal Code life imprisonment means full and complete span of life. That section 57 of the IPC is only for calculating the frictions of terms of punishment.

N k Assumi, sir Would you make it more clear how section 57 ipc is used for calculating fraction it is not clear and confusing to make life imprisonment as 20 years.pleze.
