Income tax scrutiny

Hi,

What are the remedies available to a family if someone from the family is being scrutinized under Income Tax but the person is no more staying with the Family, can the authorities do the affixation of the property.. We are staying in a rented house and the person is not with us for more than 5 years and his whereabouts are also unknown.

Please advice as we are in a very bad situation.

There is no harm to the other members of the family. At the most, the Dept may affix on your front door a notice addressed to the assessee-individual. it being the last-known address of that individual. You may write to the Assessing Officer  stating, that you are staying in the  rented house and the person is not with you  for more than 5 years and his whereabouts are also unknown to you.
