Is this proceedings unknown to law? help please?

In a Judicial Proceedings Civil or Criminal etc, is it valid and legal to examined the witnesses by the Plaintiff/ Prosecution and Defense Counsel Counsels without the presiding Judge, but with the consent of the Presiding Judge? Supposing the whole rituals is completed in the absence of the Presiding Judge with his consent, and the Presiding Judge signed the proceedings, can it be challenge by any of the parties who participated in such proceedings?

How can this happen? Then what is the purpose of having a judge? Is it documented somewhere that presiding judge was not present? Why it can not be challenged if there is evidence?

Thanks for the responds. The most unfortunate proceedings I have ever come across, a proceedings which even our Customary Court does not practise. I am trying my best that such proceedings does not continue in the near future. Thanks once again for paying attention to my startling and unusual query.
