what are minimum working hours per day or per week for an employee?

Are there different minimum working hours for an employeed person and a worker?

What is provision for extra work?

Which act/sec governs this?

Any notification pertaining to this?

Dear Abhijit

I don't think there is any law regulating "minimum" working hours.

Hi Abhijit

The minimum working hours is 8 hours per day as per Factories Act 1948 and additional 2 hours incase of overtime (excluding your lunch time). And this is applicable for all types of employees and workers in India, however it is at the discretion of the employeed to work for extra hours.

Asha ji

What find from the factories act is the "maximum" working hours. I might have missed something. Could you please refer to the section where "minimum" working hours is stipulated?

hello friends,

i think i put it wrong. What i meant was -

How many minnimum hours an employee/worker has to work in a single day/week?

and How many maximum hours an employee/worker has to work in a single day/week?

What if he works less than minimum ? ( i hope gets proportionate salary?, )

what if he is forced to work more than maximum working hours in a day/week?

If it is 8 hrs a day , then is week calculated for 5 days or 6 days?

what's remeady if he is forced to work more than maximum hours?

What is rule for overtime for an emplyeed person and/or worker?

Any act/sections/notifications?

thanks

Dear Abhijit,

As per the Factories Act maximum working hours for adults per week is 48 and per day is 9. Maximum Working hours for child (more than 14 yrs) is 4.5 hrs in a day. Wages for over time is double the normal wages (Section 59).

I don't think any minimun hours of work are prescribed under Labour Act. Only it restricts the maximum hrs or days of work.

Factories are permitetd to employee worker for maximum of 12 hrs per day, 13 hrs of Spread Over period and 60 hrs of a Week. For thiis an exemption order should be obtained from Inspector of Factories.
