Modification of staircase to first floor property

Dear Forum Members,

We own a 70 year old house in Gujarat where the Basement and Ground floor is owned by us and First Floor is owned by another family.

The house designed such that the staircase to the first floor passes through the Ground Floor.

I understand the first floor owners have a right of access but can we modify the same to enhance the safety and security of our house?

Yes, on mutual understanding and co-operation otherwise the same common passage of staircase can be used commonly by all the portions of flats as common interest.
