Maids are not tipped in French hotels. Of course they are by some folks and unless they pass some law forbidding it then the practice will continue. There is nothing "problematic" with showing some generosity to those who have helped you along the way including ménage up after you. Yes, of course that is what one expects and for a job well-performed there are ways of showing gratitude.
