Purchase of Agricultural Land

Hi,

My father-in-law owns agricultural land in Madhya Pradesh.  They are agriculturists since generations.  However, me or my forefathers are not agriculturists and do not own any agricultural land.  Can I or my wife purchase any agricultural land in any state in India?  I have heard that my wife can inherit agricultural land of her father and hence we can become agriculturists.  Alternatively can my wife buy agricultural kand since she comes from an agricultural family?  Needed to understand the legal provisions regarding the same

Thanks

Saurabh
