State vs opponent

If my wife files a complaint directly in court then does that mean that i have to fight a case against state as well as my wife. I noticed that in some cases women would go to court and file a case once the chargesheet is prepared the case would be name after state such as, state of XYZ W/O Mr. XYZ   VS  OPPONENTS.....DOES THIS MEAN THAT OPPONENT HAVE TO DEFEND HIMSELF AGAINST STATE AS WELL AS HIS WIFE ? This is very confusing to me i would appreciate if someone could answer my dumb question.

hello,

criminal cases are fought against state.

eg if some one files a case under some section of IPC then this person will be complainaint and his/her case will be defended by state.
