The Delhi High Court directed the government and Hockey India (HI) to file an affidavit regarding as to what procedures will be adopted to conduct fair elections of the national sports body.

A bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Rajiv Sahay Endlaw directed Hockey India (HI) to file a detailed affidavit with regard to the appointment of observer and returning officer for the national body’s election scheduled by February 7.

Additional Solicitor General A S Chandhioke told the court that the Government is ready to appoint a retired High Court judge as a returning officer to see that the elections are conducted in a fair manner.

The Court was hearing after clubbing the two petitions- one filed by filed by Rahul Mehra, who questioned the way in which the sports body is functioning and alleged irregularities in conduct of the election, with the Sports Ministry application, which rejected the appointment of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief GS Mander as the returning officer for the elections.

The ministry opposed Mr Mander’s appointment since he is also a senior vice president of the IOA. The ministry, which claims that its decision has the support of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), said no one from HI or IOA should be part of the electoral process.

The hearing will resume on February 3.
