A non-judgmental media is welcome: Nooriya's lawyer

Nooriya Haveliwala’s lawyer Renuka Laxmeshwar on Wednesday did not press for the plea of in-camera proceedings, but added that she was against trial by media.

“As long as the media doesn’t express its opinion and reports the
court proceedings, I don’t have a problem,” said Laxmeshwar in court.

Haveliwala is accused of running over six people and killing two men, including a police officer, on Friday night. The court also heard the application moved by the media persons forced out of court on Saturday during the remand proceedings of Haveliwala.

Rizwan Merchant, who appeared for the media, argued that the media has a constitutional right to report the proceedings as per the article 19 of the constitution.

Merchant further argued that the directions of the court to the media to stay away from the court proceedings does not fall within the ambit of article 19(2) that deals with the reasonable restrictions against freedom of expression.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate, VW Sonawane, is likely to pass an order on both the applications on Thursday.
