JUSTICE GYAN Sudha Mishra, 61, who was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 30 April 2010 is known for her legal acumen and correct interpretation of the law of the land.
Justice Mishra is the fourth woman judge of the highest court of our country. Recalling history, one can recount that Fatima Beevi was the first woman judge, Sujata Manohar the second one and Ruma Pal the third one.
Gyan Sudha Mishra is the fourth one but certainly not the last one. The number of women judges in the High Courts and women lawyers in the district courts is on the rise.
The national capital has a High Court of its own. There are as many as eight women judges in the Delhi High Court. The Bombay High Court is close behind with seven judges.
By the way, the Supreme Court of India has a sanctioned strength of 31 judges and with the swearing in of Gyan Sudha Mishra along with two more judges, the number of functional judges at the Apex Court now stands at 30.
It may not be out of place to say that with the mounting arrears and part heard cases rising every moment, the Apex Court either should have more judges on the bench or restrict its jurisdiction to cases involving interpretation of law at the highest level. Right now the Supreme Court in its magnanimity entertains petitions and Public Interest Litigation in cases fit for Gram Nyayalayas only.
