Deorukhkar sent to Tihar jail, Nanu's JC extended till 5th Mar
Former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi's close aide Shekhar M Deorukhkar was on Saturday sent to Tihar jail under 14-day judicial custody for his alleged role in the multi-crore rupees overlays scam linked to the sporting event.
"It is submitted (by the CBI) that since the investigation is not yet complete accused may be remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Shekhar M Deorukhkar is remanded to judicial custody till March 5," Special CBI judge O P Saini said.
Deorukhkar was arrested from Pune on 11th February. He is the fifth person to be arrested in the scam in which nearly Rs 600 crore worth contracts relating to the Games' overlays project are under the scanner of various agencies.
The court also extended till 5th March the judicial custody of Binu Nanu, who is a Managing Director of private firms Meroform India Pvt Ltd and G L Events Pvt Ltd.
Overlays works included supply of tents, marquees, pre-fabricated units, portable toilets, containers, security fences, furniture, public display LED boards, floor finishes, material handling equipment, gensets, cabling, UPS, air-conditioners, lighting, civil construction, athletic exercise equipment and grandstands.
After Deorukhkar pleaded that he be allowed his spectacles and medicines inside the jail, the court directed the jail supreintendent to consider his prayer as per the jail manual.
