NHRC team inspects scene of crime at Nighasan

An investigation team of the National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday inspected the scene of crime in Nighasan where a teenaged girl was allegedly murdered inside the premises of a police station and examined the records.

The two-member team comprising IPS officers P S Rao and Anil Sharma, which arrived  Lakhimpur, UP Tuesday morning, visited the 14-year-old girl's house and recorded statements of the victim's mother and brother, who was reportedly a witness to the incident, officials said.

The Commission, taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, had on Monday decided to send its own team for an on-the-spot inquiry into the incident.

The Commission has also sought a detailed report from Director General Police of Uttar Pradesh on the matter within four weeks.

The girl was found hanging from a tree inside the premises of Nighasan Police Station.

The victim's mother in her complaint had alleged that her daughter was raped and murdered.

The fresh post mortem of the girl on Monday revealed she was murdered but ruled out rape.

After the fresh revelation Lakhimpur SP D K Rai was removed and Amit Chandra, a PAC Commandant in Lucknow, has been posted in his place.

Tirath meets PC, discusses Lakhimpur case

Union Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath on Tuesday discussed the Lakhimpur rape-and -murder case with Home Minister P Chidambaram and said he has taken note of many such cases coming to light in recent times.

The Centre wants to amend the definition of rape to make the law against it more stringent, she told reporters after the meeting.

"A committee is already working on this and after its report comes, suitable steps will be taken," Tirath said.

She discussed the issue of the alleged rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl at a police station in Lakhimpur district.

Chidambaram noted that many cases of such nature are coming to light these days, the minister said.

Terming the Lakhimpur case as a "very serious matter", Tirath had on Monday accused the state government of being "insensitive" and said the Centre must intervene.

"I have also written to the National Commission for Women to probe the matter and after they give a report, action will be taken accordingly," she had said.
