The special investigation team (SIT) that probed the Ishrat Jehan encounter case, will approach the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) directly for an FIR in the case against the policemen involved.
"We have decided to lodge a complaint on Wednesday or Thursday," an official connected with the SIT told HT.
"It will mention how the shootout was staged and name those who staged it."
Normally, an FIR is registered by the local police. But the Gujarat high court had transferred this case to the CBI after the state police was thoroughly discredited.
Late last month, the court-appointed SIT had concluded that 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan and her three friends were killed in a fake encounter in 2004 and around 20 policemen were involved in it.
The police had maintained that the youths were members of Lashkar-e-Taiba and were on a mission to kill Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.
The court had handed over the case to the CBI, noting that the state police could not be trusted to carry out an impartial probe.
The SIT's list of accused will include suspended deputy commissioner of police DG Vanzara, who is currently in jail as a prime accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, superintendent of police, Kheda, Girish Singhal, deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Tarun Barot and suspended DySP NK Amin. Amin, too, is in jail in connection with the Sohrabuddin encounter case.
This is the fourth fake encounter case the CBI has been asked to probe in Gujarat. The high court had already asked the CBI to probe the Sadiq Jamal encounter case.
Besides, the agency is investigating the Sohrabuddin and Tulsi Prajapati cases by order of the Supreme Court.
