SC cancels bail of Ansal brothers

The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail of Sushil and Gopal Ansal, who were sentenced to two years of imprisonment by the trial court in the Uphaar fire tragedy, which claimed 59 lives. The apex court also cancelled the bail granted to Ajit Chowdhary and Nirmal Chopra, managers of the theatre, who were awarded seven years of imprisonment. The order was pronounced by a Bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and G S Singhvi. They were granted bail in January 2008, which the CBI is opposing. The court is upset after charges that the Ansal brothers tampered with court records. Documents showing their direct involvement in the case were taken away from court, allegedly by the Ansals. "Tampering with court record is a serious offence, worse than murder and dacoity. High court should not have granted bail," said The Supreme Court on Wednesday.
