A media report was released stating that over 500 families, belonging from Gadaria (shepherd) Community, of several villages in Rajasthan’s Banswara use their children as a pawn for Rs. 1500-2000.
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance of the media report. The NHRC is a Statutory public body established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. It plays an important role in protecting and promoting Human Rights. The commission has issued a notice to the chief secretary and to the Ashok Gehlot led government to submit a report within 6 weeks.
The commission stated that these kind of activities raise serious issues of violation of human rights of the innocent children . In the age of getting an education, they are being given under a custody of strangers to earn money.
The state authorities are expected to recognise all the victims and provide them with the basic necessities including food and education. The authorities are also expected to conduct surveys in different districts of states to check whether such activities prevail there.
This is the second major instance of human rights violation in Rajasthan in the last few days. In the past month, the Commission had alreay issued a notice to the Rajasthan state government over the delay into filing of an FIR in the rape case of a Dalit woman in Alwar.
