The Apex Court of India has issued guidelines to put a check on the vehicle parking problem across Delhi NCR, the bench believes the increased number of cars in recent years and lack of proper allocation of land as the root cause of the problem.

The writ petition filed by attorney M.C. Mehta shows concern regarding the lack of proper parking policies which can directly impact the town planning and pollution level of the city.

The court looked into the draft rules of the Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking Places Rules 2019 and suggested guidelines which shall be notified before September 30.

According to the Apex Court:

  1. Multiple drop and go zones should be developed in transport hubs like bus-stands, railway station, metro stations and airports to lighten the weight of parking issue.
  2. Institutions like universities, hospitals, government offices and court etc to maximise parking facilities for its employees, officers and visitors.
  3. Adequate parking spaces are to be allotted for vehicles carrying goods in bulk especially in the market areas of the city.
  4. Separate lanes for ambulance, fire trucks and police vehicle are to be created with no parking instructions to fasten their movement on roads.

The Court has also ordered the Delhi Government to install the new age technology like parking assistance and information system in transport hubs, institutions and commercial areas to help the public with parking. According to the Delhi Govt. buildings will now have to go through parking space assessment and pavements have to be cleared for pedestrian to use properly. The Court has listed the matter for January next year and also asked for an assessment report in October.
