The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on pleas challenging the ongoing protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019, at New Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, till 23 March stating that it will hear the case on ShaheenBagh once things have settled and there is a favourable environment to hear the pleas related to the sensitive issues arising from anti-CAA protests.Justice Kishan Kaul, who headed the bench said, "Let the matter cool down, first." The apex court termed the incidents of violence in Delhi’s northeast area as unfortunate but refused to entertain pleas on them. The apex court also pulled up Delhi police for not being able to handle the violence in northeast Delhi.

The court, on February 17,had asked senior advocate Sanjay Hegde to "play a constructive role as an interlocutor" and talk to the protestors to move to an alternative site where no public place would be blocked. They submitted their report in a sealed cover to the top court and the bench made it clear that the report will not be shared with the petitioners or the lawyers representing the Centre and Delhi Police at this stage.

ABOUT THE PIL

The said public interest litigation (PIL), was filed by Nand Kishore Garg and Amit Sahni through their lawyer Shashank Deo Sudhi, and it sought appropriate directions to the Centre and others concerned for removal of protestors from ShaheenBagh near Kalindi Kunj. The petition seeks appropriate direction to the respondents, including the Centre, for laying down "detailed, comprehensive and exhaustive guidelines relating to outright restrictions for holding protest/agitation" leading to obstruction of the public space.

CURRENT HORROR IN DELHI

Thousands of people, including a large number of muslim women, have been on a sit-in demonstration along a stretch in south Delhi’s ShaheenBagh to protest the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019, for more than two months. This has led to frequent traffic snarls.

Clashes between supporters and protesters of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019, broke out on Sunday evening near Jaffrabad in Delhi. All hell broke loose as when a series of riots and violent incidents begun in North East Delhi on 24th February succeeding BJP leader and former MLA, Kapil Mishra’s, ultimatum to the protesters, failing which he stated he would take matters into his own hands. Following his comments, multiple clashes occurred the next day in North East Delhi resulting in police and civilian deaths. The death toll has risen to 21 and at least 150 people have been severely injured, as of Wednesday afternoon.
