Former Attorney General of India and Padma Bhushan winner Ashok Desai died on Monday morning. He was 77.
In 1956 Desai started his practice in Bombay High Court. From 9 July 1996 to 6 May 1998 he served as India's attorney general. From 1989 to 1990, he was also the Solicitor General of India. In 2001 He won the Padma Bhushan Award and the Law Luminary Award.
Desai had appeared for one of the petitioners in the landmark case of decriminalisation of homosexuality. He had told the Supreme Court that many countries around the world have accepted homosexuality and that Section 377 had “created utter chaos”.
He was also a part of the VineetNarain case on powers of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Central Vigilance Commission case and the Narmada Dam case.
