Mumbai DCP Files Criminal Defamation Against Arnab Goswami, Wife And Republic TV

- A Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mumbai) Abhishek Trimukhe has filed a case of criminal defamation against the editor-in chief of Republic TV Arnab Goswami , his wife Samyabrata Goswami and the ARG Outlier Media group responsible for running the channel.

- The case was filed over comments made by Goswami during a panel discussion featured on Republic TV.

- The panel discussion was on the call records between Rhea Chakraborty and the DCP, which Republic TV claimed to have accessed.

Contents of the Complaint

- The suit claims that the allegedly defamatory remarks were 'grossly false” and were made 'with a singular view of assassinating DCP Trimukhe's official character and thereby maliciously and deliberately causing undue humiliation of the Mumbai Police”.

- The Complaint also alleges that Goswami posted defamatory tweets about DCP Trimukhe and the Mumbai Police.

- The Complaint has been filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 499, 500 (Defamation) and 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory).

Arnab Goswami's Claims

- According to the News Agency PTI, Arnab Goswami's legal representatives claim that the twitter account in question is fake and that he is 'not on social media”.

- It further stated that on the remaining accusations, the legal representatives of Republic TV would be responding as per due process.

What's next for Arnab?

Caught in between the alleged TRP scam and the chargesheet that was filed against Goswami in connection with a 2018 abetment to suicide case, the present defamation suit is hardly the starting point of litigation troubles for Arnab Goswami and Republic TV. Further replies are awaited from the legal representatives of the accused.
