PM says reforms here to stay, can fix loose ends: 'MSP was, is, will be'

GENERAL OVERVIEW

• PM Narendra Modi in a recent debate at Rajya Sabha replied to the motion of thanks on the President’s address saying “MSP was there, is there and will remain”. This comes out as a major response to the ongoing protests, promising the existence of MSP. Procurement of food grains and the distribution to the 80cr people would continue.
• Furthermore, PM Modi also emphasized on the ineligibility of the Farmer’s Reforms to be taken back but suggested that any loose ends can be taken care of after a detailed discussion on the matter.
• He calmly requested the Farmers to tone down the protests and to come forward with a rational solution which could be mutually acceptable.
• While signaling towards the farmers from Punjab and Haryana, who are seemingly leading the protests, he stated that 86% of the farmers own less than 1 hectare of land and that all the reforms are made taking in consideration the economic condition of such farmers.

FACTUAL INFORMATION

• Remembering the famous leader Chaudhary Charan Singh, he said “Don’t we have any responsibility towards these 12 crore small farmers… Should we not keep them at the center of our policies? Chaudhary Charan Singh had left this question to us… We have to find answers.” Pertaining the freedom of every farmer from the shackles of obsolete laws.
• While addressing the opposition, he said that every government has an idea to introduce reforms for farmers but in their own opinionated view. Even though the government could be blamed for all the agitation and ruckus but it should have been accepted that the laws would be changed for the better one-day, dynamic nature of laws are an important factor for embracing the modern era.
• PM Modi even mentioned about the cut-throat resistance faced by Lal Bahadur Shastri during the initial stages of Green Revolution but the results of such a huge step are still evident.
• Talking about the inescapable nature of changes, in a very calm manner, PM Modi said “If not today, then tomorrow whosoever is here, they will have to do it. Today I have done it. Gaaliyan mere khaate mein jaane do (Let me hear the abuses). But join me in this brilliant effort. Bura ho mere khaate mein, achcha ho aapke khaate mein (Let me face the rough consequences, let the blessings be with you). But let’s march shoulder-to-shoulder.”
• While the present situation which could be beneficial for farmers, the sudden lapse of time should be taken care of, instead of moving backwards we should move forward and give these reforms a chance to prove themselves in the longer run.
• Furthermore, PM Modi explained how different schemes are still going on for the betterment of the famer’s economic condition and that the government is stringent towards any kind of malice present in these reforms.

HOW WOULD SUCH STATEMENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE? 

• Such promises from the PM of the country could in fact tone down the protests and there could be a high probability that the farmers might give these reforms a second chance.
• It is a high time that farmers take in consideration the benefits of such reforms, it has been in the news lately that several farmers have gained a higher profit than usual after the introduction of these reforms. This step might really prove to be a huge success for our farmers.
