WHAT DID THE COURT SAY

  • A Delhi Court has remanded freelance journalist Rajeev Sharma to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate till July 14.
  • The decision was given by the Additional Sessions judge, Justice Dharmendra Rana.
  • The judge opined that a case had been set up by the prosecution for further custodial interrogation and hence the order for remand had been given.

WHAT WAS THE CASE

  • The Enforcement Directorate had initiated investigation against the accused under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Official Secrets Act.
  • He was arrested for allegedly supplying to Chinese officials confidential information in lieu of remuneration, thereby compromising national security.
  • The case is ‘Directorate of Enforcement V. Rajeev Sharma’.

ARGUMENTS CONTENDED

  • Sharma stated that the ED had carried out parallel proceedings to harass him.
  • He also claimed that he was innocent and could explain each and every monetary transaction and payment received.
  • The ED contended that Sharma had been non cooperative with the investigation officers and had given elusive responses.
