The Delhi High Court issued a notice to Delhi police seeking a reply whether Sanjeev Nanda, convict in the BMW hit-and-run case, can be granted bail. Undergoing five-year jail for mowing down six people in 1999, Nanda moved the High Court seeking bail. Appearing for Nanda, Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani pleaded for bail on the ground that his grandfather S M Nanda, fomer Naval Chief, was not well and wanted to see him as he was his only grandson. Justice Kailash Gambhir, however, expressed reservations saying that the criminal appeal filed by Nanda had already reached its final stages. However, Mr Jethmalani kept pressing for bail and referred to ‘excellent’ service rendered by Nanda’s grandfather to the nation. ‘S M Nanda was a man of excellent credentials, who served the nation throughout his life. He was the man who took a boat and went alone to Karachi in the 1971 war to bomb the city. He is now above 90 years of age and is losing his memory. Whenever he gets back his memory, he remembers his only grandson,’ Mr Jethmalani said, while seeking bail for the convict. Moved by the flailing conditions of the former Navy chief, the judge then agreed to hear the plea and issued notice to Delhi Police. Nanda, son of arms dealer Suresh Nanda, was sentenced to five-year jail term on September 5 for killing six people, including three policemen, by his BMW car in the wee hours of January 10, 1999 at Lodhi Colony.
