Women Have A Higher Propensity When It Comes To Justice, Expressed By President Ram Nath Kovind

BACKGROUND

• On Saturday President Ram Nath Kovind stressed the importance of increasing women participation in the judicial process in order to establish a just and equal society. The President was addressing a gathering which was organised to lay the foundation stones for the new National Law University in Prayagraj, Allahabad, as well as the Allahabad High Court's new building complex.

PROCEEDINGS

• The President stated that he believed that a society of justice can be built by increasing the role of women in the legal system. He went on to say that women's representation in the judiciary is now less than 12%, and that it should be improved for the smoother functioning of the judiciary.
• The President went on to explain that the Allahabad High Court has to incorporate more women into the court in order to meet the values of our Constitution. • He said that the citizens of India must strengthen the participation of women in the judiciary if they want to accomplish the Directive Principles of our Constitution. The President also stated that he hoped that the number of female lawyers, officials, and justices in this High Court increase.
• The President went on to say that the Apex Court, for the first time in human history, has four women judges out of a total of 33 on the bench.
• At present, only four women serve on the Supreme Court, out of a total of 33. Three of the four judges, Justices Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna, and Bela Trivedi, were appointed on August 31 after the Court Committee recommended them on August 17 and the Central government immediately accepted the recommendations. Only eleven women have served as a part the Supreme Court bench since its inception, out of a total of more than 250 judges.
• During his address to an audience at an event held by the Bar Council of India to honour him last week, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana criticised the lack of female representation in the judiciary.
• The President also complimented Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was also present, for enhancing the state's rule of law. He asked all parties involved to ensure that the ordinary citizen receives justice in a timely and faster manner.
